Marko Ivic

Marko Ivic (Venezuela/Croatia) studied classical piano in Zagreb, Croatia, after which he joined a master program in Live Electronics at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam. Since then he has staged and taken part in interdisciplinary performances of varied kinds, alternating the roles of maker, performer and composer/sound designer. His work constantly fluctuates between music making and his intuitive need of working with the body and imagery. 

Together with Fernanda Libman Foneseca and Reza Mirabi, Ivic has been selected for the New Adventures trajectory where they want to learn from each other's practices and work together through a non-hierarchical methodology. The creators all studied at the AHK, but each in a different practice within the performing arts. They all use the body as a starting point for their research and their movement practice is strongly related to sound and musicality.

"I’m moved by subjects like identity, sexuality and belonging as an existential quest. As a result, I have been exploring the relationship between body and instrument as objects on stage, which became an imperative in order to deconstruct and re-articulate my relationship with the piano and the physicality of music making. Musically, I’m inspired by minimal music and improvisation, specially using live electronics and electroacoustic set ups. I’m particularly interested in creating environments where my improvisations can support reflection and meditativeness, since these seem to be natural for me when I play."

During the New Adventures trajectory they want to learn from each other's practices and work together through a non-hierarchical methodology. In their collective research they want to explore the many relationships between movement and sound. They look at the differences between the two phenomena, cases where movement becomes inseparable from sound, or where sound becomes indistinguishable from music. As a methodology, they work with the concept of murmur (a low, indistinct but often continuous sound) as an analogy for sound and murmuration as an analogy for movement: ˈmɝː.mɚ (phonetics of murmur) is the title of the work and at the same time refers to the central approach of the project. By bringing their individual approaches to movement in relation to sound into the same space, they aim to create a murmur together.
