Wojciech Grudzinski
New Adventures 2023 #2 / Supported Artist
Born in 1991, Wojciech Grudziński is a Polish artist, choreographer, and dancer based in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Roman Turczynowicz Ballet School in Warsaw and the faculty of contemporary dance at the CODARTS – Rotterdam Dance Academy in the Netherlands. His work explores in-between and interdisciplinary spaces. Rooted in the performative freedom and emancipatory force of dance, his artistic practice navigates implicit and explicit power dynamics in theater and choreography, embracing queerness and diversity.
In 2023, Wojciech graduated with a Master's Degree from DAS Theatre - Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam. He has been granted scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, along with the Capital City of Warsaw. His work and development has been supported by Movement Research Study Visit Programme at Judson Church in New York, National Institute of Music and Dance, Art Stations Foundation by Grażyna Kulczyk, Komuna Warszawa, NOWY Teatr, Visegrad Artist Residency Program, ICK-Artist Space, and Tanzrecherche NRW. He has collaborated with artists such as Dries Verhoeven, Ben J. Riepe, Marta Ziółek, Ula Sickle and Maria Magdalena Kozłowska among others.
During the summer of 2019, Grudziński was a resident at Komuna//Warszawa, during which he embarked on creating his first group piece inspired by the landscape of Family Allotment Gardens. The piece titled RODOS was included in the TOP10 THEATER 2019 category published by Polityka magazine. In 2021, Grudziński premiered DANCE MOM, a work resulting from collaboration with the choreographer's mother. The concept's foundation stems from the theme of "next of kin" and explores the intricate relationship between a mother and her son. During his Master's studies at DAS Theatre (2021-2023), Grudziński took a closer look at the topic of the bowing gesture and its ambiguous meanings, resulting in the development of his latest work, BOW A STUDY. His main question was: what is the difference between a stage bow and a social bow? A bow is an expression of gratitude on stage, and it becomes a figure of acceptance and consent in a social sense. In the frame of New Adventures in 2023, Wojciech is working on TEACH ME NOT, in which he explores the relationship between teacher and student.
