Disappearance

2019

Emio Greco | Pieter C Scholten

How ether waves come to life

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
Nirvana — Smells Like Teen Spirit

Disappearance, the second part of the diptych Appereance – Disappearance, is an ode to the temporality of phenomena. Much of what we considered to be normal, we lost through corona. It wasn’t just about our health, also the power and fragility of values such as intuition, naivety, urgency and open-mindedness were at stake. But that too has an end. We realize that when something appears, it will also disappear. And then something new will appear again, albeit perhaps in a different form or guise.

In this fascinating performance by Emio Greco | Pieter C. Scholten, 12 dancers, music, projections, light and children’s voices come together in the ether. In an interspace where everything disappears and appears, where bodies long for a voice and voices yearn for a body. The production is a sensory experience that starts in the dark and, through blue - red - yellow, ends in the light, in open-mindedness and hope, from a simple black to a complex white hole.

The intriguing projections by filmmaker Ruben van Leer create a mystical phantom realm, in which that which has disappeared becomes tangible: a movement that has faded, a memory that cannot be grasped, a helping hand. In the ether the dancers confront the sound palette of sound artist Salvador Bree and Pieter C. Scholten, who intersperses pop songs by David Bowie, Björk and Radiohead, among others, with the radio sounds, children’s voices and electronic music.

Where Appereance stopped, Disappearance continues. The show premiered in Luxembourg in 2019 and received rave reviews from the international press. The Dutch premiere had to be postponed due to corona, but now the show can be visited in The Netherlands, with an almost new cast.

‘Disappearance is an essential, enchanting and profound piece that calls everyone to question their own choices about life.’ - Thomas Hahn (dansercanalhistorique.fr)
